Since the dawn of time and the creation of Office 365 we used DirSync, and then transitioned into Azure AD Connect. This has worked great so far but did have limitations. Especially if you wanted to bring identities from multiple domains and didn’t want to setup trusts or just couldn’t see the other DC’s from your AADC server.
This is where Azure AD Cloud Sync comes in to play. You place an agent on any server, connect it to the domain and you can bring over identities into your M365 tenant. Setup multiple agents in multiple domains, configure each one and you have identities coming in to your tenant from different sources.
There are transformation options on each agent so that if you don’t have the same vanity domain for your UPN’s as an example, then you can change those and get them parsed through into the M365 tenant to match what you want.
